GM Volt to get 230 MPG

GM has just started an advertising blitz regarding their new Volt.  The Volt according to GM will get an astounding 230mpg in city driving.  This is by no surprise the best fuel efficient car in the world.  The previous title holder was the Toyota Prius at 50mpg.  The Volt achieves this amazing fuel efficiency because in the first 40 miles on a full charge, the car only runs on pure electricity.  Once the batteries are drained, then it use a gas engine.  While running the gas engine, it charges the battery.

GM is currently making about 10 cars per week for testing purposes.  They expect to have the car in showrooms in late 2010 with a price tag of about $40,000.  This prices is expected to be lower with government tax credits.  It will be interesting to see how well this car does for GM.
