More Turn by Turn Navigation Apps on iPhone

Tom Tom is the latest company to introduce a turn by turn navigation application on the iPhone joining Sygic and Navigon.  The software only apps from these companies are roughly 70-90 dollars.  It is a far cry from the 0.99 cents apps that dominate the app store.  Most of the 3 navigation apps out there share the same features found in traditional navigation systems.  They include turn by turn directions, day and night mode, multiple language support, points of interest, speed and distance.  Some features that are found in the iPhone versions allow for landscape and portrait views and the ability to receive a call.  However, when a call is received you do lose the turn by turn functionality and the app must reload after the call has been terminated.

Some highly requested features that are present in the traditional navigation systems that are not present in the iPhone versions are the ability to mount the iPhone, there is no text to speech to tell to turn on a particular street, and the GPS strength isn’t as good as the traditional GPS systems. Tom Tom on the other hand is developing a car mount system that adds these features but they have not introduced it yet.
